Ronald McDonald House Volunteer

The Orange County Ronald McDonald House is a 20 bedroom “home away from home” for the families of seriously ill children who are being treated at local Orange County hospitals. Volunteers that work in the House perform a variety of tasks, including housekeeping chores, fundraising activities, and groups cooking lunches and dinners for the families staying in the House.

The Ronald McDonald Family Room at CHOC Children’s is a special place within the hospital where families can relax and take a break while still being close to their child. Volunteers in the Room play a crucial role in maintaining the friendly, caring atmosphere of the Ronald McDonald Family Room. There are two Ronald McDonald Family Room locations, one in CHOC Children’s in Orange, and the other in CHOC Children’s at Mission in Mission Viejo.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and have excellent communication skills. A minimum commitment of 100 volunteer service hours is required. All applicants selected for our volunteer program will receive a general health clearance and TB testing at UC Irvine Medical Center’s Occupational Health Department. In addition, we will do a criminal background check. There is no charge to the volunteer for either of these services. Application can be found on the college volunteer page of the website. When volunteers are needed, applicants are selected based on their availability, skills, background and the thoroughness of their application. Applicants selected to move forward in the volunteer process will be notified.

Autumn Years Alzheimer’s Assisted Living Volunteer

Volunteers will have the opportunity to socialize, play games, and interact with assisted living residents diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Minimum volunteering requirement is two hours a week with flexible scheduling (anytime from 9AM to 9PM, seven days a week). Volunteering at Autumn Years will allow students to gain experiences similar to interacting with patients in the hospital. They will also be able to learn more about the effects of degenerative motor diseases.

There are various volunteer opportunities offered by the Children’s Health Initiative of Orange County (CHIOC). CHIOC is a small non-profit that aids families in searching and applying for a low-cost health insurance program for their children. This organization is very small and is in need of volunteers that can help in different capacities. You may volunteer as an Administrative Volunteer, Health Care Referrals Aide, or a Special Events Volunteer. If you are interested, fill out an application and e-mail or call Laura Trejo (see above)!
